The Grooviest Music of 2012

I featured a lot of groovy music here on DEEP DISH in 2012, and below I've selected my favorites of the year in order of preference (click on a name for more info):

11) Wrong Direction's "Disclosure"
This anti-Romney parody based on One Direction's hit song, "What Makes You Beautiful", was written and produced by Full Frontal Freedom a coalition of independent artists and media executives using their talent and creativity to raise awareness and enhance civil discourse. And it certainly doesn't hurt to have the adorable Colby Melvin and four other hunks in the video.

10) Tom Goss
For the third year in a row this talented singer-songwriter has made my list. In October he released a "revealing" new music video of his song, "Make Believe", which is available on his album, Turn It Around.

9) Mary Edwards
This year singer-songwriter Mary Edwards released a new album,Eastern/Central & Mountain/Pacific, which just puts me in a groovy mood.

8) Andrea Marcovicci
In July this lovely lady returned to Davenport's Piano Bar & Cabaret in Chicago to make me smile with her cabaret show called Smile.

7) Karen Mason
It's always a great pleasure to see this fabulous lady, who performed her show, The Secrets of the Ancient Divas, at Davenport's in June. Below you can listen to her sing "Downtown/I Know a Place" from her 2001 album, When the Sun Comes Out.

6) P!nk
I know she's been performing for many years, but I didn't become a fan until I heard "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)", the first single from her sixth studio album, The Truth About Love.

5) Cheyenne Jackson
I love this gorgeous guy's new music video of "Don't Wanna Know", the catchy third single from his upcoming 2013 album.

4) Liz & Ann Hampton Callaway
These incredibly talented sisters performed their wonderful show, BOOM!, in Skokie in April.

3) Generationals
I discovered this American indie rock duo while having lunch at Chipolte, where I heard their song, "When They Fight, They Fight", from their 2009 debut album, Con Law.

2) Will & Anthony Nunziata
In August this amazingly talented twin duo brought their show, Broadway, Our Way, to Davenport's in Chicago, and it was a memorable evening of songs and laughter (click here to read my interview with them).

1) Rumer
My favorite live performance of 2012 was by this British singer/songwriter, who performed at Chicago's Lincoln Hall in February. She has been compared to Karen Carpenter and Carole King, and I get a Dusty Springfield vibe from her soulful voice. You can judge for yourself while watching her music video of "Am I Forgiven?" from her critically acclaimed debut album, Seasons of My Soul. You can also listen to her cover of John Sebastian's 1976 hit, "Welcome Back", which was the theme song of the sitcom, Welcome Back, Kotter.

The Grooviest DVDs of 2012

Here is my list of favorite DVDs released in 2012 in order of preference (click on a title for more info):

10) Bob: The Complete Series
I liked Bob Newhart's third sitcom, Bob, which aired on CBS for 33 episodes back in 1992-93. He played a comic book artist, and the supporting cast included Cynthia Stevenson, a pre-Friends Lisa Kudrow and the legendary Betty White, who is probably the reason for this obscure DVD release (now they need to release her own short-lived 1977-78 sitcom, The Betty White Show).

9) As the World Turns: The Wedding of Bob & Kim and Guiding Light: The Jennifer Richards Trial
SoapClassics' license to release episodes of the dearly departed daytime soaps, Guiding Light and As the World Turns, recently expired, so we sadly won't be getting any more DVDs of these shows. But I enjoyed the ones that were released this year, including the 1985 ATWT wedding of Bob and Kim that featured Julianne Moore as Bob's daughter Frannie, Marisa Tomei as Marcy Thompson, Brian Bloom as Dusty Donovan and the handsome Gregg Marx as Tom Hughes AND the 1981 GL murder trial of Jennifer Richards with appearances by Kevin Bacon as Tim Werner, Lisa Brown as the scheming Nola Reardon and the hunky John Wesley Shipp as Kelly Nelson, the object of Nola's affections.

8) Stephen Sondheim's Company
Company is one of my favorite musicals, so I'm quite pleased that this filmed presentation of the 2011 New York Philharmonic staged concert was released on DVD. And what a cast - Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, Martha Plimpton and the fabulous Patti LuPone!

7) The Sullivans, Volumes 1 and 2
Each DVD volume features 50 episodes of this 1976-83 Australian drama about the effect that World War II has on the lives of one family.

6) House of Dark Shadows
This 1970 feature film version of the popular daytime serial was finally released on DVD as was the 1971 sequel, Night of Dark Shadows.

5) The Sterile Cuckoo
Liza Minnelli was nominated for an Academy Award for her lovely performance as the kooky Pookie Adams in this 1969 film, which also features the Oscar-nominated song, "Come Saturday Morning", by The Sandpipers.

4) Laverne & Shirley: The Fifth Season
This sitcom's fourth season was released on DVD in 2008, so it only took four years for us to finally get the classic "Diner" episode (aka "Betty Please").

3) Number 96: The Beginning and the Bomb
A 40th anniversary collection of the groovy Australian soap opera, which ran from 1972 to 1977.

2) Designing Women: The Complete Sixth Season and The Final Season
Shout! Factory released the final two seasons of one of my favorite sitcoms. I wasn't a big fan of Julia Duffy's Allison Sugarbaker (who replaced Delta Burke in the sixth season), but I liked Jan Hooks as Charlene's sister Carlene. I also enjoyed Judith Ivey, who joined the cast as the wealthy B.J. Poteet during the show's seventh and final season. And any series featuring Dixie Carter, Annie Potts and Alice Ghostley deserves to be on DVD in my opinion.

1) The Carol Burnett Show: The Ultimate Collection
My favorite DVD release of 2012 is this Time Life collection, featuring 50 episodes of the best variety show ever. Classic sketches include Went with the Wind! with Carol as Starlet O'Hara (in the infamous Bob Mackie-crafted curtain-rod dress), Sunnyset Boulevard with Carol as Nora Desmond, the soap opera spoof, As the Stomach Turns, and, of course, The Family with Eunice and Mama. And Carol's impressive guest list includes Maggie Smith, Betty White, Steve Martin, Shirley MacLaine, Joanne Woodward, Rock Hudson, Joan Rivers, Lily Tomlin, Bernadette Peters, Petula Clark, Madeline Kahn, Peggy Lee and many others.

And, finally, at the top of my DVD Want List for 2013 is Time Life's spring release of China Beach: The Complete Collection, featuring all 64 episodes of the 1988-91 ABC drama as well as such bonus features as a cast reunion and interviews with stars Dana Delany and Marg Helgenberger. Time Life spent over a year clearing the rights to nearly 500 musical copyrights so that the DVD will be released with almost all of the series' original music intact. Now we just need to get DVD Complete Collections of Maude, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Flamingo Road, Homefront, Knots Landing, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and WKRP in Cincinnati (with all of its original music intact).

Happy New Year from Lorna, Mitzi & DEEP DISH!

I wanted my first post of 2013 to be something groovy, so I think this old brochure fits that criteria. It's for the 1980 Summer Season of Kenley Players in Columbus, Ohio - "America's most exciting summer theatre where the stars shine all summer long!"

The Grooviest Television of 2012

$

0

2012 was a terrific year for television. There were so many great shows that I was unable to narrow down my list to only ten. So here are my Top 15 series in order of preference:

15) Political Animals
I'm disappointed that this enjoyable series will not be returning for a second season. The excellent performances of Sigourney Weaver, Ellen Burstyn and the gorgeous James Wolk were worth tuning in for.

14) GCB
The most disappointing cancellation of the year was this amusing comedy starring Kristin Chenoweth, Miriam Shor, Annie Potts and a frequently shirtless Mark Deklin. I miss these funny ladies (and hot guy).

13) Once Upon a Time
I'm amazed at how well the writers are able to juggle so many fascinating characters, and the handsome Colin O'Donoghue (as Captain Hook) and the fabulous Barbara Hershey (as Cora) have been wonderful additions to the show.

12) The New Normal
The best new comedy of 2012 is this groovy gay sitcom, which some folks hate. They find Ellen Barkin's extremely homophobic character to be too much, but I look at her and see a female Archie Bunker, who was TV's first outspoken bigot. This series also features the hilarious NeNe Leakes, the gorgeous Justin Bartha and young Bebe Wood, who may turn out to be the next Meryl Streep.

11) Homeland
I just started watching the first season of this Showtime series on DVD a few weeks ago, and now I can understand why its winning all the awards. Both Claire Danes and Damian Lewis are outstanding, while the drama is definitely "on the edge of your seat" tense.

10) Nurse Jackie
I watched the third season of this Showtime series on DVD in 2012, and the performances of the entire cast are so good - especially Anna Deavere Smith and Merritt Wever. Nurse Jackie is a perfect blend of comedy and drama.

9) American Horror Story: Asylum
And here I thought the first season of this anthology series was delightfully demented. Jessica Lange continues to astound me with yet another brilliant performance as Sister Jude, while Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, James Cromwell and Evan Peters have also been acting the hell out of the "anything goes" scripts.

8) Smash
It was definitely a bumpy first season, but I loved the original music and most of the performances - especially Katharine McPhee, Christian Borle, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston. And I'm looking forward to Season 2, which begins on February 5 with new cast members Jeremy Jordan and Daniel Sunjata and special guest stars Sean Hayes and Jennifer Hudson.

7) Dexter
I watched the first four seasons of this addictive drama on DVD in 2012, and I look forward to spending more time with the talented Michael C. Hall in 2013.

6) Parks and Recreation
Once again this is my favorite sitcom of the year. No one makes me laugh more than Amy Poehler and her hilarious cast.

5) Dallas
It felt like old times seeing J.R. and Bobby and Sue Ellen and Cliff again, and I look forward to Season 2, which begins on January 28. It will be interesting to see how the show continues without the late, great Larry Hagman. I think they need to persuade Victoria Principal to return as Pam, who has become a rich "Alexis" bitch since we last saw her. Below you can watch a special holiday greeting from the Ewings.

4) Nashville
The best new drama of 2012 is this country-fried soap opera starring the always engaging Connie Britton, the sexy Charles Esten and the deliciously bitchy Hayden Panettiere.

3) Downton Abbey
What's not to like about this entertaining period drama? It's got the magnificent Maggie Smith - and this Sunday the series returns for a third season with the marvelous Shirley MacLaine. I can't wait!

2) Mad Men
Zou Bisou Bisou, I loved the fifth season of this 1960s drama, which continues to be one of the best television series of all time.

1) The Walking Dead
In 2012 I became a devoted fan of this emotionally-draining zombie drama, which made me cry when Lori died during childbirth. And the addition of the incredibly talented David Morrissey as the seriously disturbed Governor has made this "must-see" Sunday night television.

The 5 Most Disappointing Television Experiences of 2012:

5) Revenge
What the hell is going on with this show? I LOVED its first soapy season, but Season 2 has introduced some bad storylines and boring characters (Aiden, Padma, the Ryan brothers and the Initiative's Helen). Hopefully the second half of this season will be better.

4) The Vampire Diaries
Turning Elena into a vampire was a big mistake, and I stopped watching.

3) 666 Park Avenue
What a waste of Vanessa Williams' talents.

2) Bunheads
What a waste of Sutton Foster and Kelly Bishop's talents. This Gilmore Girls-wannabe was the most disappointing series of 2012.

1) Liz & Dick
The worst television experience of the year was watching Lindsay Lohan try to impersonate Elizabeth Taylor. She failed miserably in her attempt.

The Grooviest Daytime Soap of 2012: Days of our Lives
I was hooked on the sordid lives of Salem this year as my favorite homosexual, Will Horton, got Gabi pregnant, Sami's hot brother Eric returned as a priest (played by the hot Greg Vaughan), and Eileen Davidson returned to the show after 14 years as the devious Kristen DiMera, who quickly began an affair with John's son Brady.

The Grooviest Daytime Actress of 2012: Susan Flannery
The Bold and the Beautiful actress left the show after 25 years, and her beloved character Stephanie sadly died.

The Most Intriguing Daytime Drama of 2013
Will Prospect Park finally bring back All My Children and One Life to Live? It would be so nice to see Erica Kane and Viki Lord again. Click here for more details.

Groovy Guy of the Month: Rob Christopher

$

0

Each month I feature an interesting Groovy Guy or Gal - and the winner of this prestigious title for December is Chicago author Rob Christopher, whose new book, Queue Tips: Discovering Your Next Great Movie, is my first Groovy Giveaway of 2013 (click here to enter). Rob's other creative projects have included the 2003 book, 100 Spinning Plates; the 1999 documentary, Kosher Messiah (as the co-editor); articles for such publications as the Chicago Reader and American Libraries; and the website, Chicagoist, where he has written about film, cocktails and other Chicago topics since 2006. And I've been a fan of his groovy blog, RandomCha, for many years.

Now I've asked Rob to get Deeper with us here on the Dish by answering a few questions about his life and, of course, pop culture.

What inspired you to write Queue Tips?
I wanted to write a book that would quickly introduce readers to some movies they probably hadn’t heard of before - either movies that kind of flew under the radar when they first came out or ones that have faded into semi-obscurity over the years. Above all the point of the book is to encourage people to watch movies a little more consciously. I just think movies give you greater enjoyment when you take some time to think about what you’re going to see.

Can you recall the very first film you ever saw?
My mom likes to tell this story about taking me to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I was really little, and she was so exhausted that she slept through the whole movie. The first movie I can remember really flipping out over was probably Flash Gordon. I was way more into Flash Gordon than I ever was into Star Wars.

You're also working on an interesting project called 3 Things about 500 Movies, which you've been featuring on your blog. How did you come up with this idea? And how do you choose what films and what three things to write about each of them?
When you see so many movies, frankly they start to get scrambled in your brain. It occurred to me that although writing an out-and-out review of every movie I watched just wasn’t feasible, at least I could jot down a few things to sort of act like memory triggers. So now I take the time to write down three things about pretty much every movie I watch. Things that stuck in my mind - a moment onscreen or a line of dialog, things like that. And I often find myself going back to my "3 things" entry about a movie to refresh my memory - it actually works!

Keeping in the "3" spirit, what were your three favorite films of 2012?
The Master, Skyfall and Cosmopolis.

What are three of your favorite films that you've watched many times?
True Stories, Belle de Jour and It’s a Wonderful Life.

What three films would you like to see released on DVD?
Diary of a Mad Housewife, The Movie Orgy and Las Hurdes (Land Without Bread).

If I were asked to choose the Sexiest Man Alive, it would be:
Totally uncreative here, but James Franco.

If I could have anyone in the world - living or dead - be a guest at my dinner party, I would invite the following three people:
Luis Buñuel, Dawn Powell and David Byrne.

What's next for Rob Christopher? Any New Year's resolutions for 2013?
Good question! I just want to keep writing and watching movies. The rest will take care of itself. As Janet Leigh says in Psycho:“Headaches are like resolutions. You forget them as soon as they stop hurting."

Thank you, Rob, for being such a groovy guy! Click here to follow him on Twitter.

Today's Hot Guys are Christian Mortensen and Aaron O'Connell, who are featured as sexy plumbers in my favorite commercial of 2012.

The following are my favorite people of the year:

10) Nate Silver for successfully predicting the Presidential Election (and he's gay!).

9) Cris Alexander & Shaun O'Brien for being a groovy gay couple for 62 years (the 92-year-old portrait photographer/Broadway actor and the 86-year-old former New York City Ballet dancer died less than two weeks apart in 2012).

8) John Unger for loving his dog Schoep (after their photo went viral, Unger received over $25,000 in donations to save Schoep's life).

7) Gabby Giffords for continuing to be such an amazing inspiration.

6) Newark Mayor Cory Booker for his support of gay marriage.

5) Straight professional football players Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo for their support of gay marriage.

4) Sgt. Brandon Morgan and his boyfriendDalan Wells for giving us the Best Kiss of 2012.

3) Ellen DeGeneres for being the grooviest spokesperson for JC Penney.

2) Sally Field for being the Grooviest Mother of the Year (she received HRC's Ally for Equality Award in 2012).

The Grooviest Person of 2012: A tie between Barack Obama & Joe Biden for their support of gay marriage AND for continuing to be our President and Vice President for the next four years!

Now here are my Worst People of 2012:

6) Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock

31 Cold Days of Hot Guys #4: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

This month DEEP DISH is featuring a different hot guy(s) every day to warm us up during this cold winter season.

Today's Hot Guy is 31-year-old actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whom I still remember as a young David Collins on the 1991 TV remake of Dark Shadows. And I just learned today that his grandfather, Michael Gordon, directed the 1959 Doris Day/Rock Hudson film, Pillow Talk.

Below you can watch him perform a Magic Mike striptease on Saturday Night Live in September and look cool in a behind-the-scenes video of a 2012 Flaunt magazine photoshoot (the pics are from the shoot).
